Exploring Beijing

Exploring Beijing

Explore Beijing is part of a series of travel photos from the Explorer Lifestyle Team has been busy traveling around Asia. Beijing is one of the modern yet cultural cities of China that always fascinates travelers. From the Great Wall of China to Tienanmen Square, to modern shopping streets overshadowing the traditional food alleys, you can find all of this in and around Beijing.

The Explorer Lifestyle team visited Beijing in Nov 2013 as it was nearing winter and spent a good, fun and interesting five days there. We also took an AirAsia X flight to Beijing just to prove that the flights are on par with other full serviced airlines. Yes, five hours on the AAX flight was just as comfortable as any other airline. Anyway, once there, we took our own sweet time to walk around Beijing and here are some of the photos we took for Explore Beijing.

There you have it, some random photos taken during our amazing trip to the capital of China. It is highly recommended that you visit Beijing once in your lifetime and the best time is also during Fall or Spring. It is also recommended that you spend a minimum of four days if you want to see some of the world-renown attractions here. Moving around is quite simple to but if you have experience in speaking Mandarin, that is a very helpful bonus. However, a lot of the signage are in English too. Hope you like our article on Explore Beijing.

Timberland 40 Years Tribute to Heritage and Craftsmanship in Malaysia

Timberland Malaysia 40 Years

Timberland 40 Years Tribute to Heritage and Craftsmanship in Malaysia

Timberland® pays tribute to the 40th Anniversary of its iconic Timberland® Yellow Boot with a weeklong celebration that honors the brand’s heritage of quality craftsmanship. From the Yellow Boot’s inception 40 years ago in a humble workshop in New Hampshire, USA to its modern interpretation today, consumers can experience how the art of craftsmanship has been nurtured by Timberland® for the past forty years and how it is being interpreted by the millennial generation today.

“Timberland pays homage to the Yellow Boot that has been the inspiration for countless collection over the past 40 year. In fact, the Timberland Yellow Boot became such an icon that our company changed its name to The Timberland Company as recognition of the Yellow Boot’s impact back then,” said Daisy Tan, General Manager for Timberland, Singapore and Malaysia. “Through our BEST THEN, BETTER NOW campaign, we celebrate a very special milestone for Timberland® while sharing our inspiration towards craftsmanship and product innovations that are relevant to today’s generation.”

Creators at the Workshop

During this weeklong celebration, Timberland has built a Workshop — a living, breathing intersection of style, quality craftsmanship and millennial culture. In collaboration with local artisans – coined Creators at the Workshop – consumers can marvel and discover craft-making while witnessing Timberland’s values in action through the featured Earthkeepers™ Heritage Collection of eco-conscious footwear and apparel.

The Workshop, crafted in collaboration with local artisans KONTAK!, showcases Timberland’s shared values of sustainability and eco-friendliness by using recyclable and reusable materials for the staging and display areas. “A third of the materials used through our event are eco-friendly reusable materials. I’m very pleased that Timberland have this opportunity to collaborate with KONTAK!, to assist in constructing such a beautiful and unique event installation while remaining sustainable and eco-friendly,” said Tan.

“With Timberland’s core values of style, performance and sustainability, we knew we had to create an impressive runway stage. So, we came up with the idea of reusing wooden pallets to build the runway stage and display showcases. The result is a very usable installation that projects heritage with a sense of rustic ambiance,” said Shaffiq

Ahmad, representative from KONTAK! To date, KONTAK! has collaborated with independent art galleries and independent artists to produce three-dimension art installations for local and international exhibitions.

Timberland is also collaborating with Art Misfits to showcase a new craft that represents the millennial generation. The collaboration allows consumers who purchase the Yellow Boots the opportunity to personalize the iconic product with inspired art pieces permanently etched onto the Yellow Boots using a technique called Pyrography, which is the craft of painting with intense heat suitable for materials like genuine leather.

“We are really honoured to be part of the celebration. Coming up with the right designs that work well with the existing aesthetics of the Yellow Boots was a good challenge for us, as it drove us to explore ideas out of the ordinary. We hope that this design personalization workshop will give Yellow Boots owners a sense of pride in owning an one-of-a-kind but stylish pair of boots,” said Michelle Yeoh, representative from Art Misfits.

Tritha from North India to perform at AMF 2013 Sarawak

Tritha from North India to perform at AMF 2013 Sarawak

Miri will resonate with the sound of music as the inaugural Asia Music Festival takes place at the Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club on the 4 & 5 October 2013. 13 Asian bands from the Philippines, Korea, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei have confirmed to perform at this festival. Among them will be the talented Tritha from India that will make her first ever performance at the Asia Music Festival in Sarawak.

Tritha was born in Kolkata. She started training in North Indian classical music at the age of five, and never stopped. She has forged her own unique, inclusive sound and has already gained critical and popular acclaim for her songs. Tritha’s dusky tones and throbbing intensity, vibrating and moving emotional commitment, thrills her audience and leaves the public spell bound.

For the past four years Tritha has also toured in Europe, including performances in famous venues such as Lieu Unique (Nantes), Il Posto (Verona), La Bellevilloise, Cabaret Sauvage, Bus Palladium, Satellit Café and St Eustache Church (Paris). She is a true global artist, always eager to discover new cultures and sounds.

As a woman, Tritha has suffered her share of harassment and discrimination in her country. She feels that her live performances, as well as her recent success as an original musician in India, are giving confidence to other women to assert themselves and follow their dreams. She is an ardent supporter of women’s rights in the country.

She includes her ideas in her songs with “Lyrics that deal with women’s liberation, social oppression and sexual exploitation” (Hindustan Times). In June 2012, she was featured on a full page in Marie Claire India as one among the ten most interesting young Indian women, and also that same month, in Tehelka Magazine. Tritha’s picture has been traveling all over the world in 2011 and 2012 with the exhibition Women Changing India, organized by the Magnum Photo Agency and BNP Paribas.

Bembol Rockers to play at Asia Music Festival Sarawak

Bembol Rockers

Bembol Rockers to play at Asia Music Festival Sarawak

If you were a huge fan of Elvis, the Rat Pack, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk and Plas Johnson or if you want to try something new, then check out the Bembol Rockers at Asia Music Festival (AMF) held at 4th and 5th October at Miri, Sarawak. This band from Philippines formed since the Summer of 2006 consisting of Marc Liwanag on guitar and vocals, Lakshmi Kirtan das Ramirez on upright bass and vocals, Archimedes Archie Lacorte on tenor and alto sax, and Steven Hamilton Vasquez Mora on drum.

The music that they create, that is what making them so special. A lot of other bands tried to do jazz or rockabilly, but no one tried to combine these two types of music and that is exactly what Bambol Rockers do. A lot of music that they are playing are originals. They use the superiority of sound of their kundiman-rockabilly mish-mash and adds a element of Filipino pride.

But their main goal is to go back to the classics they all love and recover a new appreciation for it in light of today’s world. Their intention is to influence the younger generation to take a look at the past and see where their music comes from, to create a renewed interest in the Golden Fifties. Not just for the music, but the lifestyle, the dancing and the vintage attire, as well. They also want to make their mark on the Original Pilipino Music scene and help raise its level of artistry. They want to be remembered for music that is positive and fun.

Other bands that have been confirmed for this first year event are VSTAR featuring Kamal Musallam (Korea), Anthony Dassan Yen Party Band (South India), Orkes Soesah Tideor (Indonesia), Foxy Girls (Indonesia), Boy Thai Band (Thailand), Tritha (North India) and Fakhrul Razi (Brunei).

There will also be bands and singers from Malaysia and among them are Melissa Francis, Starlet Band, The Mountain Wind Band, Hevance Band and Sarawak very own Bob from the famous Malaysian TV program, Akademi Fantasia.

Entry tickets are priced at RM30 for adults and RM15 for children/students aged 3-18 (ID required during entry). Tickets available from all STB’s office and Visitors Information Centre located at Old Court House, Kuching (+6 082-423600), Jalan Melayu, Miri (+6 085-434180) and Jalan Tukang Besi, Sibu (+6 084-340980). In two months, MyTeksi has secured rides for Good Vibes, We Love Asia and plans to partner with Arthur’s Day. Despite being fresh in the business, MyTeksi is making their mark at Malaysia’s biggest events. Their services facilitates the ultimate concert festival experience, removing the hassle of designated drivers and parking. But more than that in partnering with events, MyTeksi is making itself part of Malaysia’s young new cultural fabric.

For The Killers, MyTeksi is offering RM20 cash-back for all taxi rides booked via the MyTeksi app to the event (anywhere from Klang Valley, Cyberjaya, and Putrajaya only). MyTeksi strives to offer users the ability to enjoy a hassle free concert with seamless transportation to and from the event.

In addition to setting up to serve their passengers, MyTeksi also values their drivers by making sure they have dinner and a place of their own. Events for MyTeksi are not about business, they’re about people.

“Malaysia’s big events are what MyTeksi was made for,” says MyTeksi’s Regional Marketing Head, Cheryl Goh. With rave reviews, MyTeksi is excited to participate with The Killers. This isn’t MyTeksi’s first rodeo and they’re ready to take the astronomical turn out now that they’re seasoned with experience. Cheryl adds, “For us, this is more than a business, it’s a social enterprise. We come to these events to show that we’re providing safe public transportation AND show our taxi drivers that we appreciate them. We’re not just here to bus people around, but to make them aware of our service and innovation.”

Also they’re giving out free ice cream! Yes, free. Anyone with the MyTeksi app is free to collect on some sweet Artisan Potong Pops. At every event so far, MyTeksi has been helping passenger’s satisfy their sweet tooth and get home with fuller stomachs. Music events are a place to enjoy the night life. MyTeksi is putting taxis where and when you need them. Though simple it is innovation at work. As a young start up, it’s doing two important things: answering a problem most Malaysians have had with getting a taxi and tapping into Malaysian youth to start a change.
