Rainforest World Music Festival Sarawak

RWMF 2013

Rainforest World Music Festival in Sarawak

Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) is happening on this June 28-30 at the Sarawak Cultural Village which is just out of Kuching city. YB Datuk Amar Abang Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg – Minister of Housing & Minister of Tourism, Sarawak announced this today at a press conference held at Plaza Merdeka, Kuching.

The Minister also proudly announced the ‘BrandLaureate Country Branding Award 2012-2013’ awarded to the festival in a glittering ceremony in Kuala Lumpur recently. The BrandLaureate Awards is the Grammy Awards for branding and the No.1 branding awards in the Asia Pacific and is endorsed by the King of Malaysia.

Once again this year, the Festival was voted for the 4th consecutive year as the top 25 best International Festivals by the renowned world music magazine, Songlines, in UK. The winning award and recognition has elevated its status in the international music scene as a festival which has well and truly put Sarawak on the world tourism map. It also extends its appeal to shores further from neighbouring countries.

Through Sarawak Tourism Board’s promotional and marketing effort overseas, RWMF packages are promoted from as far as London and the regions nearby like Brunei and also Peninsula Malaysia. These travel packages enable visitors to come and visit Sarawak not only for the festival but also to explore and experience the adventure in Sarawak.

This year will be another exciting year and the organizer has promised the best line-up on stage from 21 bands which consist of 13 international and 8 Malaysian bands playing a diverse range of world music genres. The festival will continue its unique formula of having the afternoon informative musical workshops, ethno-musical lectures, jamming session and mini concerts held in the ethnic houses within the village. This session precedes the evening performances on two main stages outdoor with the jungle ambience.

The festival will showcase more of Sarawak’s local talent compared to the previous years. This is in line with the feedback received from the festival-goers from the previous festivals. The chances of sharing the same stage with international acts will enable our local musicians to be exposed to the international music scene. Amongst the wide range of traditional music from Sarawak to be featured this time will be the rare and dying art of the nose flute as well as Sarawak and Malaysian folk music interwoven with Chinese traditional instruments.

RWMF Malaysia

The exciting and eclectic line-up for this year’s RWMF has now been finalized. To date, the organizers have confirmed performers from Indonesia (Rafly Wa Saja), Iran (Mohsen Sharifian & The Lian Band), Australia (Nunukul Yuggera), Denmark (Habadekuk), South Africa (Dizu Plaatzies & The Ibuyambo Ensemble), Ukraine (Spiritual Seasons), USA (Pine Leaf Boys), France (Chet Nuneta), Columbia (Rey Vallenato Beto Jamaica), Croatia (Kries), Ireland (Kila), Austria (Alp Bora) and Korea (Palsandae). They will be joined by Sarawak and Malaysian bands like Madeeh (Bidayuh traditional root), Juk Wan Emang (nose flute of Kayan), Native Chanting (oral blessings from the various indigenous tribes of Borneo), Maya Green (Sape), Rhythm in Bronze (Gong and Gamelan), Lan E Tuyang (Sape and Orang Ulu dance), Sarawak Drums (percussion instruments of Sarawak) and Shangyin Chinese Chamber Music Ensemble (Chinese traditional interwoven with Sarawak flavour).

For most visitors to the state, the Rainforest World Music Festival is a not-to-be-missed occasion, guaranteeing a smashing time of a visit to Malaysia. RWMF is where people from different culture, backgrounds and music interests will come together to have the time of their lives.

Daily tickets priced at RM120 for adults and RM60 for children aged 3 to 12 are now available on line at http://www.ticketcharge.com.my. A 3-day pass for adults costing RM330 and RM160 for children aged 3 to 12 are also available.

For 2013, the Organizers hope to attract a crowd of 23,000 for the 3 nights against the 22,290 festival attendees in 2012. Out of this, the Board hopes to attract 80% visitors from outside Sarawak. This will thus augur well for the local business community and also contribute to a significant number of visitors’ arrivals into Sarawak as a whole. For more information, log on to http://www.rwmf.net

Aqua Zumba at Celebrity Fitness Malaysia

Aqua Zumba Malaysia

Aqua Zumba at Celebrity Fitness Malaysia

Imagine partying yourself into shape with an invigorating low-impact aquatic exercise. Accompanying you, are a great bunch of people, grooving to an exotic rhythm set to high-energy Latin and international beats with a great instructor taking the lead. With a little “boogie” here and some “woogie” there, you burn up to 400 calories-in just one class! This is exactly what describes Aqua Zumba.

Proudly introduced by Celebrity Fitness Malaysia, the FIRST Aqua Zumba launch in Asia is designed to improve the body and health in general. By integrating the zumba dance class with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout.

Perfect for cardio-conditioning and body toning, this class is a great workout for both beginners and Zumba fitness enthusiasts alike because it engages most of the core muscles, including arms and legs. As the moves are performed at a slower pace, one can still achieve a great workout due to the viscosity of the water. This will definitely be a perfect class for those who have joint or back problems.

“People are always looking for new and exciting classes to boost their fitness routines. This prompted Celebrity Fitness to introduce something different to our members. This time around, we are proud to introduce the first Aqua Zumba launch in Asia and this class is only available in Celebrity Fitness MidValley,” said Kris Malhotra, Country Group Fitness Manager of Celebrity Fitness Malaysia.

Aqua Zumba Master Trainer, Maria Teresa Stone, made a special appearance during the launch in Celebrity Fitness, MidValley and showcased a few Aqua Zumba steps with a group of Celebrity Fitness instructors.

“I am very happy that Celebrity Fitness Malaysia has taken the first step to introduce Aqua Zumba and I believe Malaysians will be very excited to join this class because this will be a whole new dancing experience that sets your energy soaring like never before,” said Maria Teresa Stone.

Having pursued her passion for dance and fitness at a very young age, Maria Teresa Stone taught her first group fitness class in 1996. Being a fitness instructor and a group fitness manager for several years, her passion in Zumba is always thriving. In year 2007, Maria became a Zumba Education Specialist (Master Trainer) and launched a few Zumba programs in New Zealand and Australia.

Kris added, “Aqua Zumba is certainly a new fitness twist to both fitness novices and hardcore gym goers. Many will be surprised that working out in the water can be so much fun.” Members of Celebrity Fitness have the privilege to join Aqua Zumba for free, classes are available at Celebrity Fitness Mid Valley starting July 2013.

Aenie Wong

Bosu, which stands for “Both Sides Utilized”, will prove a class favorite for members who love challenging fitness moves. This programme is easily applicable to daily functional requirements because the human body’s everyday movements are in 3D – for instance, stabilizing one’s body on a stool while you are taking an object that is located above!

For whole body movement, ViPR would be the best option. Performing at the highest level with renewed sense of energy and movement possibility, ViPR training is a blend of lifting, shifting and twisting. If you are new to indoor cycling class, Celebrity Fitness C-Heart RateTM is the perfect place to start. Its simple choreography is very easy to follow with easy speed sections and low intensity hills set to popular fun music.

Inspired by the current craze for self-defense moves, the Celebrity Fitness HitBackTM class mixes traditional boxing, kick boxing, and Japanese-based martial arts to music, allowing members to punch, strike and kick with the best of them. “The 3D FUN Group Functional Fitness Studio is specially created for people from all walks of life. Some may like challenging fitness programmes, others may prefer a slow pace workout and yet others may even prefer to increase their muscle mass. Whatever it may be, we have it,” said Krishnan.

Walking for Charity with Malaysia Airlines

Walk For Charity 2013

Walking for Charity with Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines is organising a walkathon and carnival at the Malaysia Airlines Academy in collaboration with MERCY Malaysia on the 12th of May 2013. Aptly named the MH Walk-A-Fund, this initiative is an extension to the on-going fund raising campaign called “Change For Charity” where contributions are sought from Malaysia Airlines’ guests both on-board and at the national carrier’s ticketing counters.

The MH Walk-A-Fund will be graced by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya who will deliver his welcome speech and greet the guests. The flag off for the MH Walk-A-Fund will be as early as 8am and is expected to end an hour later. The 6km walk will be around the Kelana Jaya area.

The campaign highlights the plight of vulnerable communities and gives Malaysia Airlines’ guests an opportunity to do good for a very worthy and needy cause. Funds collected are then channelled directly and wholly to MERCY Malaysia’s Humanitarian Fund which is used for various MERCY Malaysia projects around the world.

Dato’ Najmuddin Abdullah, Malaysia Airlines, Head of Strategic Communications said, “We are expecting a large turnout of at least 2000 participants and visitors to the Walk-A-Fund and carnival. Apart from the walkathon, the car park area of the Malaysia Airlines Academy will be transformed into a carnival ground. Many exciting booths will be opened to entertain the guests that come. Amongst others, we have a booth for celebrity items auction, lucky draws, dance performances and lots of food and drinks. We urge the public to come together to support this charity event and have a fun-filled weekend with their families at the same time. All divisions in Malaysia Airlines are working together to make this event a success. The team is very focused in raising funds for this noble cause and spirits are high,” he added.

Performers from MASenidaya will also be entertaining guests at the Malaysia Airlines Academy. MASenidaya consists of full-time Malaysia Airlines employees who are talented in performing arts. The MASenidaya group is renowned for the many performances they have done locally and internationally by the invitation of Tourism Malaysia. Apart from MASenidaya, Malaysia Airlines Cabin Crew will also be performing. The organisers have also prepared a flash mob that will be staged towards the culmination of the event.

The national carrier will also open its Heritage Museum for the public on the 12th of May. This Heritage Museum displays various articles such as old cabin crew uniforms, old aircraft engines and many more historical items of Malaysia Airlines from yesteryears. Photos of the first cadet pilot group and the first set of Golden Girls (MAS Cabin Crew) are also on display.

Malaysia Airlines and MERCY Malaysia have been in partnership since 2004 to provide support and relief to victims of natural disasters. It was agreed that MERCY Malaysia implements volunteer opportunity programmes for Malaysia Airlines staff in order to train them for possible participation in relief missions within Malaysia and beyond.

The Change for Charity campaign is a part of Malaysia Airlines’ Corporate Social Responsibility programmes and allows both Malaysia Airlines and MERCY Malaysia to establish a framework for strategic collaboration for humanitarian assistance.

8 Reasons why Melbourne is the World’s Best Place to Live

Melbourne, Australia Is The World’s Best Place To Live?

In a recent ranking of the world’s “most livable” cities, Melbourne, Australia took the number one spot. The Economist Intelligence Unit gave the city perfect marks for education, healthcare, and infrastructure while Melbourne’s total score was 97.5 out of 100, only losing a few spare points for climate, petty crime, and culture. Australia had five other cities in the top 10, but Melbourne with its Gothic Laneways, music culture, and gorgeous Yarra River was proclaimed the very best.

8 Reasons why Melbourne is the World’s Best Place to Live

  1. Melbourne sits on the gorgeous Yarra River, making it a prime spot for water sports, boating, and scenic views.
  2. The city also hosts many world acclaimed festivals from the Melbourne Food & Wine festival, L’oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival to International Comedy Festival, plus more.
  3. Melbourne’s residents are surrounded by cutting-edge architecture, like the Digital Harbour Port 1010, the Arts Centre Melbourne spire, and the Melbourne Recital Centre, while balanced with ample parks and gardens, such as the famous Royal Park which covers 420 acres and is open to the public.
  4. Melbourne is considered a UNESCO City of Literature because of its literary festivals, book stores, publishers, and history of famous, award-winning authors.
  5. Behind Melbourne’s grid-like streets are quirky little Gothic Laneways which house restaurants, book stores, and unique shops. Not forgetting the vibrant nightlife options that include underground bars, jazz cafés, and dance clubs hidden along the Laneways.
  6. Melbourne is also a shopping haven. With its seductive network of atmospheric laneways and elegant Victorian arcades, Melbourne has always been an enchanting city to shop in. Flinders Lane, Little Collins Street and the network of laneways fanning out from Degreaves Street are all brilliant spots to uncover intimate specialized stores selling shoes, lingerie, handbags, vintage and tailor-made clothing and jewellery. And if markets are your thing, Melbourne has one of Australia’s best and largest open air shopping markets — The Queen Victoria Market from 1878 — where people flock on the weekends.
  7. For the sports-loving globetrotters, Melbourne is a sporting powerhouse capital city with regular flagship big guns from the Australian Open, Formula One Rolex Australian Grand Prix, to the Melbourne Cup carnival and more, which continue to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
  8. Melbourne is never too hot or too cold. In the summer, the city sees temps of high-70s to low-80s, while the winter drops down to only ~60 degrees. Getting around the city is super easy thanks to Melbourne’s tram network, which covers over 150 miles and is one of the best in the world.
Royal Botanical Gardens

Royal Botanical Gardens, Cranbourne

Australia was indeed the top country in this list as there were 4 cities listed in the top ten list for 2013. The overall list for Top 10 are as follows;

The world’s top 10 most livable cities:

1. Melbourne
2. Vienna, Austria
3. Vancouver, Canada
4. Toronto, Canada
