Timberland Malaysia 40 Years

Timberland 40 Years Tribute to Heritage and Craftsmanship in Malaysia

Timberland® pays tribute to the 40th Anniversary of its iconic Timberland® Yellow Boot with a weeklong celebration that honors the brand’s heritage of quality craftsmanship. From the Yellow Boot’s inception 40 years ago in a humble workshop in New Hampshire, USA to its modern interpretation today, consumers can experience how the art of craftsmanship has been nurtured by Timberland® for the past forty years and how it is being interpreted by the millennial generation today.

“Timberland pays homage to the Yellow Boot that has been the inspiration for countless collection over the past 40 year. In fact, the Timberland Yellow Boot became such an icon that our company changed its name to The Timberland Company as recognition of the Yellow Boot’s impact back then,” said Daisy Tan, General Manager for Timberland, Singapore and Malaysia. “Through our BEST THEN, BETTER NOW campaign, we celebrate a very special milestone for Timberland® while sharing our inspiration towards craftsmanship and product innovations that are relevant to today’s generation.”

Creators at the Workshop

During this weeklong celebration, Timberland has built a Workshop — a living, breathing intersection of style, quality craftsmanship and millennial culture. In collaboration with local artisans – coined Creators at the Workshop – consumers can marvel and discover craft-making while witnessing Timberland’s values in action through the featured Earthkeepers™ Heritage Collection of eco-conscious footwear and apparel.

The Workshop, crafted in collaboration with local artisans KONTAK!, showcases Timberland’s shared values of sustainability and eco-friendliness by using recyclable and reusable materials for the staging and display areas. “A third of the materials used through our event are eco-friendly reusable materials. I’m very pleased that Timberland have this opportunity to collaborate with KONTAK!, to assist in constructing such a beautiful and unique event installation while remaining sustainable and eco-friendly,” said Tan.

“With Timberland’s core values of style, performance and sustainability, we knew we had to create an impressive runway stage. So, we came up with the idea of reusing wooden pallets to build the runway stage and display showcases. The result is a very usable installation that projects heritage with a sense of rustic ambiance,” said Shaffiq

Ahmad, representative from KONTAK! To date, KONTAK! has collaborated with independent art galleries and independent artists to produce three-dimension art installations for local and international exhibitions.

Timberland is also collaborating with Art Misfits to showcase a new craft that represents the millennial generation. The collaboration allows consumers who purchase the Yellow Boots the opportunity to personalize the iconic product with inspired art pieces permanently etched onto the Yellow Boots using a technique called Pyrography, which is the craft of painting with intense heat suitable for materials like genuine leather.

“We are really honoured to be part of the celebration. Coming up with the right designs that work well with the existing aesthetics of the Yellow Boots was a good challenge for us, as it drove us to explore ideas out of the ordinary. We hope that this design personalization workshop will give Yellow Boots owners a sense of pride in owning an one-of-a-kind but stylish pair of boots,” said Michelle Yeoh, representative from Art Misfits.

Once again, Timberland Malaysia was involved in a pre-Earth Day event at the Raja Musa Forest Reserve in Selangor with an exciting turn out of 100 people who included volunteers, staff, media and officials. The event which started at about 9.00 am saw an introduction and speech by relevant officials and district officers who explained the day’s itinerary. There were two main groups where a tree planting and canal blocking session was conducted where a local Malaysian lunch was prepared for the hungry group.

For ‘Timberland Malaysia, other than actively participating in tree planting efforts in the Horqin desert in Inner Mongolia, Timberland takes this initiative and brings it local through its partnership with Global Environment Centre (GEC), specifically contributing towards the conservation of Malaysia’s tropical habitats via its “Peat Swamp Rehabilitation Programme at Raja Musa Forest Reserve”.

Peat Swamp Forest (PSF) is a unique ecosystem unlike any other ecosystem. It is characterized by the accumulation of organic matter (peat) derived from dead and decaying plant materials in water saturated condition. The black peat water is slightly acidic and the ground is wet and spongy. PSFs represent an ecosystem that supports tolerant species that can survive in its unique environment, thus playing an important role in the conservation of biological diversity and storing freshwater resources. It also serves as carbon sink; able to sequester and store carbon as un-degraded organic matter for thousands of years.

Timberland Malaysia understood the importance of reviving this unique wetland ecosystem, and has established a partnership with GEC since 2011, to commit volunteers and financial resources for rehabilitation initiatives across the North Selangor region, one of the largest remaining contiguous areas of Peat Swamp forest in Peninsula Malaysia.

Timberland Malaysia Global Steward 2013, Ms Cheryl Chang, continues, “Timberland is committed to this project and wants to help restore the peat ecosystem through tree planting and multiple canal blocking. We have been working on this project for 2 years since 2011, and in 2013, we will continue to contribute at least 1500 volunteer hours from Timberland staff & associates as well as continue to commit to the 2 years programme funding of RM127,900. We believe this initiative is a great platform for us to do something for our country’s environment, as well as inspire the community around us to be involved to take protective action.”

“Environment conservation initiatives require not only funds, but we also do need people who are willing to get their hands dirty to do the actual hard work. We are really grateful to Timberland Malaysia’s employees for taking time off today to help us. Every bit they do today, will go a long way in helping us save the environment for our next generation and ensuring the sustainability of the Raja Musa Forest Reserve Rehabilitation Programme,” says Mr Nagarajan, Senior Programme Office from GEC.

Over 50 Timberland Malaysia employees, business partners and volunteers took time off today from their busy schedules today to help to do their bit for Mother Nature. They were there a full day planting suitable trees to re-vegetate the degraded peatland areas, as well as to restore the peatlands canals to keep the peatlands hydrated to reduce risk of fires.

Championing environmental causes has consistently remained as one of Timberland’s core Corporate Social Responsibility ideals. From production process to meeting the design criteria and the usage of renewable materials, Timberland has shown great commitment to being an eco-conscious lifestyle brand, reinforcing its identity in being a brand that embodies STYLE + PERFORMANCE + GREEN.
